Energy Is a Leadership Responsibility
What energy do people leave with after spending time with you?
One of the biggest misconceptions about leadership is that it is all about managing work, priorities, projects, performance and change and all those things definitely matter but before any of them comes something even more fundamental.....energy.
Every leader brings energy into a room. Sometimes it is calm, sometimes optimistic, sometimes focused, sometimes anxious, sometimes rushed & sometimes defensive.
Whether leaders realise it or not, their energy becomes part of the environment everyone else works in. As we explored in my previous article, leadership is an emotional contagion. Energy is one of the ways that contagion spreads.
Think about elite sport and watch the best coaches during difficult moments.
Their team has just conceded. Momentum has shifted. Pressure is building. The crowd is getting louder. Players instinctively look towards the coach. Why? Not because they need technical instruction but because they are looking for emotional regulation.
Should we panic? Should we stay composed? Do they still believe in us?
The coach's energy answers those questions long before they speak.
The same happens every day in organisations. When leaders arrive frustrated, distracted or visibly overwhelmed, teams notice. People become more cautious, conversations become shorter, risk- taking reduces and the room tightens.
Equally, when leaders arrive calm, curious and present, something different happens.
People think more clearly, they contribute more openly, they challenge respectfully and they collaborate more naturally. The atmosphere changes, not because the workload has changed, but because the emotional environment has. That doesn't mean leaders should pretend everything is fine, as authenticity matters a lot and people do not expect leaders to be positive all the time. They expect them to be emotionally intelligent and there lies the difference. Great leaders acknowledge pressure without transferring it.
They recognise uncertainty without amplifying it. They remain grounded when others become reactive. They create confidence without creating false certainty and that is emotional regulation. It is one of the most underrated leadership skills.
One question I often ask leaders is this:
Do people leave your meetings with more energy than they arrived with?
Not because every meeting should be exciting, but because leadership should add capacity, not consume it. When people leave a conversation with greater clarity...
that creates energy. When they feel listened to...that creates energy. When they understand the purpose...that creates energy. When they feel trusted...that creates energy. When they believe they can succeed...that creates energy. The opposite is equally true. Confusion drains energy. Micromanagement drains energy.
Inconsistency drains energy. Uncertainty drains energy and fear drains energy.
Most organisations don't have an engagement problem. They have an energy problem.
People are often willing but they could be simply exhausted by ambiguity, constant change, unnecessary complexity or leaders who unintentionally leave them carrying emotional weight that isn't theirs. Leadership is not about being the loudest person in the room. It is about leaving the room stronger than you found it.
The best leaders don't simply walk into a room and ask, "How are people performing?"
They ask, "What do these people need from me today?"
Sometimes they need challenge. Sometimes reassurance. Sometimes direction.
Sometimes coaching. Sometimes someone who simply believes in them until they believe in themselves. That is leadership.
People rarely remember every presentation you gave or every decision you made.
They remember how they felt after working with you- whether they felt energised or drained. Whether they felt stronger or smaller. Whether they felt capable or cautious.
Performance follows people and leadership changes how people feel. Perhaps that is why energy is not simply a personal responsibility but a leadership responsibility. Every interaction leaves people with either more energy.....or less. Every conversation is a deposit...or a withdrawal. The question is, Which are you making?
When people leave a meeting with you, do they walk away feeling clearer, more confident and more capable than when they arrived?
At PROBOS we believe leadership is not becoming simpler. But it can become clearer.
We help leaders navigate complexity with clarity and confidence.
Performance follows People.
Leadership shapes people. People shape performance.
